Description
This summer, a searing new theatrical experience comes to the stage: The Dance of Death, a two-hander tour de force that reimagines August Strindberg’s classic for a modern audience. Set during the first wave of Covid-19 lockdown, this bold, unnerving adaptation traps its audience inside a one-bedroom flat with Alice (Simina Ellis) and Edgar (Tom Ray) — a once-thriving creative couple now unraveling in real time. With theatres shuttered and their careers on pause, what remains is the performance of a relationship built on control, nostalgia, and unspoken war.
Loosely adapted from
Strindberg’s original, The Dance of Death trades the military
fortress for pandemic quarantine, turning confinement into
crucible. Over the course of ninety unbroken minutes, the play
peels back layers of artistic ambition, resentment, and emotional
dependence, revealing the grotesque intimacy of two people who
cannot — and will not — let each other go. This is a love story
without romance, a power struggle without exit, and a meditation on
what it means to choose survival over freedom.
Written by Glenn T.
Griffin for a post-pandemic world but echoing the psychological
claustrophobia of classic theatre, The Dance of Death is
both timeless and urgent. In a moment when audiences are ready to
reflect on the shadows of lockdown, this play dares to ask: Who did
we become when the world stopped watching? And can we ever go back
to being someone else?
